AGM Report 2007

KOA Annual General Meetings are like no other I know.  In recent years they have become celebrations. The business is kept to the minimum. In November, Chairman Brenda Groth had a little surprise for long standing committee member Charles Swaisland. Philip Martin had drawn one of his brilliant cartoons to present to Charles and the meeting made him Honorary Life President. Brenda gave Charles and Cecillie a pair of engraved glasses to remind them of the few relaxed moments with a gin and tonic on a veranda in the parts of Africa where they worked for many years of their remarkable lives. It was fitting that this year’s project was in West Africa, which they know well.

The friends of Bonou came to receive a cheque for the funds raised by this wonderful village in 2007. Our reputation may make even more development waves than the funds alone. Apparently the Mayor if Dangbo in Benin seeing photographs of our events praised us to an assembled crowd saying ‘Why harass politicians to provide everything, why not copy the villagers of Kennington?’.

Our cheque for a record 21,574 is, however, going to give the 2,600 pupils of the Lycee and the 55 primary schools books the opportunity to change their lives and develop their community. The plans have been drawn up for a library for the Lycee and work should begin this year. They have promised to keep us informed about progress and would love someone from Kennington to be there for the opening. Anyone interested? Dominique who met many of us in the summer will be overseeing the project.

So onto 2008: the selection meeting is on Thursday January 17th at 8 pm in St Swithun’s Church Hall. If you would like to receive copies of the three proposals for this year’s project, please contact either Clive or myself, or look here. Anyone can come and vote for the project of their choice. Our general meetings are not long – it is rare for them to exceed one hour and then by just a few minutes! This year is special. It is our Fortieth Anniversary. Anyone who is forty this year or has been married forty years or moved to Kennington forty years ago is specially invited to join us at our first event Cabaret and Cardomoms. If that applies to you and you are interested in celebrating with us, please contact me, Sylvia Vetta,  739071.
