Annual Report 2003

The AGM of Kennington Overseas Aid took place on 14th November. Sylvia Vetta reviewed the events of the past year and we all waited to hear whether the amount raised was a record once again. It was – an amazing 18,540 !! A big thank you to the people of Kennington. Your support for all the events made it possible for Kennington to help the children of a village called Gikongoro in Rwanda, through Hope & Homes for Children.

As always, the largest single amount raised came from the United Choirs’ performance of “Die Fledermaus”, helped by the great generosity of an anonymous donor and we are especially grateful for this. Other events which did particularly well and broke their records, were the Fete, the Fun Run and the KOA Shop. It was great to see the Fun Run raise over 1000, especially as John Barrett has decided to retire this year after many years running this event. The KOA shop raised a marvellous 3,600, the result of hard work by many people, headed by Peter Hooper, who has been the inspiration here for many years. John and Peter were thanked by the chairman for all their work over the years and were presented with gifts to mark the occasion.

Our Chairman, Sylvia Vetta, who also retired this year, was also thanked for her great leadership over the past 10 years.  A new chairman, Clive Rodgers, and vice-chairman, Brenda Groth, were elected to serve for the forthcoming year.  Secretary, Val Martin, and Treasurer, David Butler, were re-elected.

Andrew Barrett of Hope & Homes for Children, received the cheque and gave a moving account of a recent visit to Rwanda and explained how the charity will use the money given by KOA
