Annual Report 2001

At the AGM on Friday 9th November, the chairman, Sylvia Vetta, reviewed the activities for the year, and revealed that the final  total for the year was yet again a record, 14,220.11 raised for Afpic for the construction of a home for orphaned, destitute and conflict-damaged children in Thika, Kenya.  After the presentation of a cheque, Peter Tyrer told us about the work of Afpic in Thika, and showed us photographs of the children and of progess on the site of the home being built.  We also had a fascinating talk by Steve Tolan, who happened to be in Kennington briefly, on the work of the Chipembele Trust on conservation education in Zambia.

We have had another remarkable year, with yet another large increase – 50% – in the House to House Collection, and significant improvements in several other events, notably the Fun Run & Walk (100% ! – many thanks for Rev Terry Smith's sponsorship), Cabaret and Cardamoms, the Sponsored Knit and the Band Concert. The United Choirs  excelled themselves again this year – raising over 4000 from two very enjoyable performances of Princess Ida. New events included the Kids for KOA Concert, the Barbeque and the Quiz Night, all much enjoyed. Well done everyone!
